Soliciting opinion – Car Seat September 27, 2007

Zaria will be turning 1 end of this year, it means we’ll have to upgrade her car seat from the infant carier to a proper toddler car seat.

Now we have 2 choices :
1) to upgrade Zara’s current Maxi Cosi Priori SPS (takes a child up to 18Kg, about 4yrs old) to the Maxi Cosi Rodi XR (takes the child up to 36Kg, about 12yrs old) which is a booster seat; and then let Zaria have Zara’s Maxi Cosi Priori SPS
2) to leave Zara with her current car seat, and buy another Maxi Cosi Priori SPS for Zaria

Maxi Cosi SPS

The Maxi Cosi Priori SPS

Maxi Cosi Rodi XR

The Maxi Cosi Rodi XR

Both SPS and Rodi cost about the same, but getting a Rodi XR means Zara can sit on the car seat for another few more years, and stretch our money further. The only reason why I’m hessitating to get the Rodi XR is the min weight for a child to use that car seat is 15Kg, and Zara is only about 12Kg.

Unlike most children, Zara prefers to be in a car seat, and as parents, we prefer her to be in one to.  So I don’t think we’ll take her out and place her in the pessenger seat like an adult so soon yet.

What do you think? Should I go for option 1 or option 2?

I would go with Option 1…that way, when Zara out grows the new seat….it will just be in time for Zaria to take over…

ZMM : She’ll probably be 2Kg underweight when she starts using the seat. 😦 That’s the only reason why I’m holding back the purchase.

2. Zaza - September 27, 2007

i’d go with option 1. again, i wish you were here on a buying spree for both girls!!

we used our priory when aidan was 6months. we had to chuck our maxi cosi cabrio fix and took out our priori xp. he was a biggg baby!

Zaza

ZMM : And I’m going to freaked out if you tell me you got your priori XP for 100Euros! 😦

3. mott - September 27, 2007

my eldest kid was also underweight when I got the booster seat…but he soon grew into it..so, I saved money in that sense lor…

4. SASHA - September 27, 2007

OPTION 1, u dun want zara to be only 18 kg all the time right

5. chooi peng - September 27, 2007

My plan is A, that’s why i bought the infant carrier for Kai Xiang..
But for your situation, maybe i will choose B, safety come first!

6. laundryamah - September 27, 2007

I would take Option 1. 2 kg short is not really a big problem..maybe put on some weights?? sorry silly suggestion…

7. dancing queen - September 27, 2007

I may be out of touch with these car seats but I think you should just go for Option 1. Underweight? Make Zara hold a bag of beans or something! Haha..sorry just joking. Frankly, it won’t be long before she’s at that required weight. Still got time till year end for her to put on weight.

i too have this dilemma when i first upgrade my daughter from a carrier to car seat……

i think i would go for option 2 cos rodi xr can’t recline when zara is asleep during long journey and when she sits in it will her head rest nicely onto the head rest? also i think safety comes first…if it says there 12kg onwards maybe they did a reseach on it lor…well, why don u bring zara to try out both..she might give u some hint 🙂

if option 1..no worries she sure can fit in it…hehe

10. michelle - September 27, 2007

Why not just get a booster seat with the car seat belt for Zara, I am sure it is cheaper. It is easy to take in and out.

11. 1mum - September 27, 2007

eh…i read again…zara short of 3 kg to use rodi xp wor
like that better safe and sorry…don risk..buy the prior sps!

i also don think money is an issue here right? if not u also won think of buying maxi cosi ler…maybe next time zara outgrown only buy rodi xr lor..the old one can resell on ebay ma…kekkekek

12. Priscilla - September 27, 2007

Over here, the best practice and suitability for car seat is determined by the child’s weight. A child of less than 18kg needs to be in a infant car seat with the proper restraint. Childen of over 18kg can be in a booster seat by using the seat belt. I think Zara could still be a bit young for the booster seat and I didn’t use a booster seat for my son till he was about 3.5 yo. And most of the time I still put him in the infant/toddler car seat as I still believe it offers the best safety and protection. I suggest going for option 2.

13. Lucas'Mum - September 28, 2007

hi, stumbled on your blog. i’m a mum of a 1 yr 9 mth old boy.
we recently got a maxi cosi priori xp for my boy. before buying it, i did some research on what type of car seat to get. apparently, a car seat with a 5-point harness is still the best thing for a kid Zara’s age. you might want to check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azgBhZfcqaQ

so i would go with option 2. definitely.

14. the silai - September 28, 2007

errr, i don’t think i’ve ever came across a 12 yr. old who is still sitting in a child car seat? i would go for option 2 for safety reason. afterall zara still have quite a long way to go b4 she reaches the minimum15kg right? and who knows by the time she reaches 18kg and outgrow the priori sps she will prefer the passenger seat instead….just my thought.

15. Simple American - September 28, 2007

I like option 1. Just feed Zara more, so she gains 3 kg quick quick! 😛

16. anggie - September 28, 2007

heh, is good that ur gitl like to seat in the car seat … some kids, when they reach certain age, they might not like to seat in the car seat anymore … hmmmm me will go for option 1 too .

17. chanelwong - September 28, 2007

I also prefer Jeriel opn the carseat..We also hunting for booster seat for him now..How much is this booster seat?

I think the 1st option is better because Zara’s weight will increase by then….also more cost effective…

18. may - September 28, 2007

that baby car seat looks even more comfortable than my sofa! check out that padding… 😉

19. Oscar's Mommy - September 28, 2007

hmm, option 1 for sure. its just 2kg diff.. you dont want to be stuck with 2 SPS and later you’d need another booster seat for zara pulak.

20. LB - September 28, 2007

Think of the third baby coming!! Go for Option 1!

21. Jo-N - September 28, 2007

Have you done “My most embarassing moment” tag? Can I tag you on this? By the way, I have posted the fungates contact on my blog. Take a look.

22. Angeline Wee - September 29, 2007

Hie,
Seriously i would say take option one. No matter how old a child is s/he should be on a car seat! One thing being in M’sia is that a lot of ppl think that once a kid has outgrown a car seat thats it! Dnt bother buying a them a new car seat. In western countries a lot of kids are still in car seat at the age of12! Safety first! Kids would always be safe even when they are 12 or higher!
Secondly,if you are to get a new one for Zaria, then at the end of the day you would end up having 2 of the same kinds.Sooner or later you would have to get one for Zara. So might as well get one now and then when Zara outgrow it then Zaria could as least have one waiting for her and you can give away the other one, or you might have a number 3! *WINKS* Also by getting one for Zara you would not have any headaches for the next few years when she outgrow the current one!

23. slavemom - September 29, 2007

I thot the weight is jes a guide. U oso need to take into consideration Zara’s height. If u put her in the booster seat n the seat belt straps properly over her shoulder n chest, then it shld be ok. Maybe u can hunt ard for a booster seat that’s suitable for her height. So in my opinion… Option 1.

24. Yvonne - September 29, 2007

I think you have the answer already. Definitely Option1 for me too. 😀
Hmm.. but frankly I hardly see older toddler on car seat/ booster.

Btw.. we have officially moved to http://www.etceteramommy.com/blog 🙂

25. mom2ashley - September 29, 2007

I’d go for option 1

26. Mrs.Wallace - October 1, 2007

Claudia is currently using Britax similiar to SPS and MIL bought one like Rodi in Australia (while we were there). Claudia much prefer the SPS cause it more comfortable and it can be recline. While Rodi type, the child head cannot be supported when they fall asleep during the car ride. Which i don’t like cause it may cause neck injuries. I prefer option 2, just because more safe and the kids have a happy & comfortable rides.

27. nadia - October 2, 2007

Option 1 as well. 🙂

28. Wen - October 2, 2007

hi, first time here. I would go for Option 1.

29. Sweetpea - October 9, 2007

definitely option 1. 5 points harmess is the safest, don’t bother getting the normal boosters. i got one and aidan can wriggle around, which defeits its purpose.

30. Sweetpea - October 13, 2007
31. BuyAutoParts - December 5, 2007

Option 2 looks the most funkiest

32. cars1seo1fun - December 12, 2007

Gotta be option 1 for sure – That way you’ll be ready for all scenarios

33. car pictures - April 5, 2008

Option 1 of course

34. Allisia - September 11, 2008

I think you should choose SPS, option 1. Since Zaria still not yet 15kg. The main function of car seat is to protect our kid so should choose the one suitable to her. Or hold back first. Is not so critical need to change right now, right?

35. Everyday Healy - December 15, 2008

If Zara’s height can reach the headrest of the Rodi, then buy Rodi loh. If the headrest seems too high then it could be very uncomfortable for her. In this case, buy Prior loh. hehe…

To me, I am not so care about the weight thing. After all that’s only a rough estimation. Confort is the most important criteria for buying things for the little ones. LOL!

36. jacss - July 13, 2009

sounds like a dilemma for you but i think it won’t be long….maybe by the time u hv d final decision, zara has put up with the 2kg extra :)P??
option 1 certainly sounds more realistic, otherwise very soon u’ll have an extra toddler car seat!
btw, what’s the PWs for the 2 earlier posts ???
